What began as an interest in fine arts with accolades in sculpture and painting would grow and develop into a passion for fashion. Fashion designer, Jamilah
Knight, whose known for using recyclable materials, found objects, and fabric manipulation in her designs, believes that fashion is not only a form of expression but also a form of art. Jamilah's
designs are meant to inspire and make people look at fabric in a new way. Jamilah loves the creativity, originality, and imagination that's involved in fashion. Some of her favorite designers include
the late Alexander McQueen, Charles James, and Madeleine Vionnet.
Jamilah has studied under some of fashion's greatest teachers at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA; Johnson County Community College in
Johnson County, KS, and at the esteemed Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City. While in New York Jamilah interned under the close tutelage of New York Fashion Designer David
Rodriguez. Then in May of 2006, Jamilah received her BFA in fashion design from FIT. That same year, she was selected to showcase one of her dresses in FIT's 2006 BFA, "The big apple's fascination
with fashion" fashion show.
There is another side to this multifaceted designer, Jamilah also has deep love for Street Wear. She is currently designing a socially conscious T- Shirt line called "Knight in Brooklyn". It is a web based apparel company selling innovative T-Shirts and related apparel with unique topics and artwork that act as a socially conscious commentary in fresh graphic prints. It was born from Jamilah's zeal for her community and culture, as well as from her desire to see more positive images and themes with empowering messages in apparel. This line is set to launch in February 2012.
More recently, Jamilah was selected to feature her designs in the West 18th Street Fashion Show, in Kansas City, MO, on June 12th, 2010. She was also the director of the Kansas City Music and Entertainment Conference fashion show in May of 2009. Currently, she works as a freelance graphic and apparel designer.
She resides in Brooklyn, New York.
